The newcomers from Glasgow
A new Distillery from the City of Glasgow
They might be young, but they are innovative and here to stay. 1770 is Single Malt made in the City of Glasgow. 2019 was the first year they released Whisky a unpeated and a peated Version. The unpeated is 3 years old and matured in ex-Bourbon and Virgin Oak Casks. The peated is 3 years old as well but started in Sherry Casks and was then finished in Virgin Oak. I only tried the peated version and was surprised. Surprised at how complex a 3 year old Whisky can be thanks to Virgin Oak Casks. The first thing I realised was how light the peat smoke is. Even though the barley has been peated at 50ppm, the smoke is a background element. Much more present are fruit notes, citrus and caramel in the nose and some spiciness added in the taste. The place where you realise that there must be quite a bit of smoke is on the finish. Its long and oily, sticking to your tongue.
A big thank you goes to Steven Rankin, who answered all my questions and explained everything with great passion. It was great getting to try your products at InterWhisky and I hope to visit the Distillery in Glasgow very soon.
