Speyside, more then just Dufftown
A brilliant find
The Speyside Distillery, first Distillery on the river Spey. Only 29 years old but already punching above its weight. Thanks to a forum at InterWhisky, I discovered them. The first dram, was the Spey Tenné. A Whisky aged ~7 years in ex-Bourbon Casks and finished in ~6 Months in Tawny Port Casks (It's a NAS Whisky so those numbers varies from batch to batch). The colour reminded me of a rosé wine and the nose and taste kind of go in that direction. The Whisky is fruity, sweet with hints of berries. I thoroughly enjoyed the dram.
The second one was their 12 years old peated expression. Peated at around 25ppm and aged in refill Bourbon Casks the Whisky has some of the same fruity characteristics as the Tenné but underlined with a light smoke. It remains a gentle Whisky where the peat plays with the other flavours, rather then fighting for control.
A few words about the forum itself. Paul Dempsey was a joy to listen to. Passionately explaining the Whiskies and answering all the questions. He also very kindly helped me out on Sunday, when I had to retake my pictures because of my memory card breaking and the footage from Saturday being lost.
